Assignment
Semiotic Analysis Presentation
Popular Culture
For this project, you will choose a sign or symbol from popular culture to analyze, using the steps we’ve discussed in class. You may work alone or with one partner. The symbol you choose should be one that you feel invested in. Perhaps one that you own, identify with, admire, etc. Please remember throughout this process, our goal is to present information objectively with detailed and specific description. Personal judgments do not have a place in semiotic analysis.
The finished product will include:
· a visual representation of the systems your sign belongs to, along with the similarities and differences of each system to the sign
· three examples from three different types of media that illustrate the sign,
{these examples should show how wide-spread the sign is and/or support your conclusions of the signs meanings}
· an explanation of the sign {written and oral} covering:
o the relationships between the sign and all systems {similarities and differences},
o the cultural and historical context of the sign,
o the ideology/ies the sign represents, and
o the power (im)balances the sign represents
· a bibliography of at least five sources, not including our text. You may use NoodleBib - MLA advanced style.
· We will have class time to work on this project. Please come directly to the LIBRARY for Ms. Brennan’s helpful tips and class assignment webpage.
·
· Should you choose to work with a partner, as always, equal participation is expected.
